Hey everyone!
It seems that Captain Pumpkin Head’s rhymes have generated some interest out there, so for blog number two, we’re going to talk about his songs. If you haven’t checked them out yet, there are currently two raps available on the website, with two more set to be released this fall.
As you may have read in my first blog, the idea that Captain Pumpkin Head would be a rapper didn’t happen until long after the original concept for the character had been developed. Nevertheless, once the book-writing process got underway, the Captain’s rhymes seemed to find a nice home in the pages of the adventure.
As I was nearing completion of the manuscript, my wife, Esme, suggested that I put the lyrics to music and that I record the songs. GULP! As soon as the words came out of her mouth, I could feel my heart start to race. Although I play guitar and have been writing and singing my own songs for about 15 years, my audience has – by design – been limited to about 20 of my closest friends and family members. I LOVE making music, but I’ve never considered myself ready for prime time and I’ve always been too intimidated to record anything, let alone put my material out there for a broader audience.
So that’s why I decided to take a pass on making the music for this project. Instead, I let the pumpkin do it. I mean, for starters, the Captain’s a way better rapper than I am. And I don’t need any added pressure. If the songs happen to go Platinum, I know I can count on the Rap’n Cap’n to handle his new found fame!
Okay, so please be sure to download the Captain’s songs. They’re intended to be fun, and they’re not just for kids! As a bit of a teaser, I’ve included below the lyrics to a song entitled “Who I Am.” This particular rap isn’t in the book, but I think it provides a nice introduction to the Captain!
